Kenia in the Middle

It’s Monday now, which means officially starting my first week here in Puerto Rico. I couldn’t start volunteering yet because it was a national holiday however that did give me the opportunity to get to know the area a bit more before I fully got started. On this day I decided to obviously look at the beaches. I walked about 6 miles this day just exploring my new area. It truly is so beautiful here. All the trees are so different than how it is at home. They’re all so rich in color and I even saw some fruit trees as well. The water here is the same as taking a lukewarm bath. Its the perfect temperature to contrast how hot and humid it get here. The UV was at 9 by 10 am which is crazy to think about (Carmen was a little jealous of this part). By the time I got back to the hostel I was getting ready for bed then another girl in the room came in and right then I made my first new friend. Her name is Belle, she’s from Ohio and we found out we were in the same program. It was such a moment of relief for us both, knowing we had someone going through the same process as the other. Later that night we went out to dinner and just got to know the each other more and talking about how we’re feeling about everything. We were both super excited to start the next day, even though we weren’t positive on what we’d be doing. We headed back to the hostel and spent the rest of the night chatting. Having a new friend definitely made me more excited to start this experience.
